How the citizenship test works

At your citizenship interview, the officer asks civics questions out loud and you answer in your own words.

These numbers are for the 2025 test. If you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test: up to 10 of 100 questions, and 6 right to pass. The interview also covers your N-400 and, for most people, English reading and writing, which newlycitizen doesn’t teach. USCIS has the official study materials.

Five steps to interview day

Start with flash cards and work up to a practice interview. Every step uses the official USCIS answers.

  1. Read the question, answer it in your head, then flip the card. The back shows the USCIS answer word for word, so you learn the official answer.

Every question from the 2025 and 2008 lists.

  2. After each card, rate how well you knew it. newlycitizen plans tomorrow’s review from those ratings, so hard questions come back sooner and easy ones wait.

A question counts as learned after 3 right answers in a row, on different days.

  3. Short rounds by topic, by test or from the questions you saved. Every question you miss comes back in your next daily review.

  4. On the 2025 test the officer asks up to 20 questions and stops at 12 right. Practice rounds follow the same rules. Type each answer in your own words, and the app checks it against the official answer.

Practice feedback for your study, not an official score.

  5. The tutor explains the story behind an answer in plain words and links the USCIS list it comes from. Its explanations are marked, so you never mix them up with the official answer.

Civics and the test only, never advice about your case.

Four answers that depend on where you live

For these questions, the official USCIS answer is “Answers will vary.” newlycitizen fills in yours, so you study your own senators, representative, governor and capital.

ZIP code 98052Redmond, Washington
Your street address
District 1Suzan K. DelBene
District 8Kim Schrier
ZIP code 98052 is split between two congressional districts. Your street address tells us which side you live on. Drawing not to scale.
  1. 1

Your ZIP code finds your state

That covers three of the four: your senators, your governor and your capital.

  2. 2

Most ZIP codes sit inside one district

Then your ZIP code names your representative too, and we never ask for more.

  3. 3

About 1 in 6 cross a district line

Only for those do we ask for your street address, to find the right side of the line. 98052 is one of them.

The street address is optional. Skip it, add it later or remove it anytime. How we use your address

Questions people ask

Something else? Ask us on the support page.

Which test will I take, 2025 or 2008?

It depends on when you filed Form N-400. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 test. If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 test. If you haven’t filed yet, study for the 2025 test. Our guide to the two tests has the details.

How many questions are on the citizenship test?

On the 2025 test, the officer asks up to 20 of 128 questions, and you pass with 12 correct. On the 2008 test, the officer asks up to 10 of 100 questions, and you pass with 6 correct.

Is the civics test multiple choice?

No. The officer asks each question out loud and you answer in your own words. Quizzes help you learn the answers. The practice interview has you write them yourself, the way you’ll have to come up with them on the day.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. newlycitizen is on the App Store for iPhone, and the Android version on Google Play comes later.

Is it free?

Studying is free: quizzes, flash cards, daily reviews and every official question. With a free account, one short ad unlocks two practice interviews. The tutor has a monthly limit on questions.

Do I need an account?

Not to start. As a guest, you can take quizzes, use flash cards, browse the official questions and see your officials during that session. An account keeps your progress and settings, and adds daily reviews, saved questions, the practice interview and the tutor. You sign in with Apple or Google.

Is the practice interview like the real one?

It uses the same question counts and stopping rules, with official questions from your test. You type your answers, and the app checks them against the official answer ideas. It covers the civics questions only, not the whole naturalization interview, and its results are practice feedback, not an official score.

How do you find my representative?

Your senators and governor come from your state. For your representative, we start with your ZIP code. If it sits inside one congressional district, that’s all we need. About 1 in 6 ZIP codes cross district lines, so for those we ask for your street address and link the right representative. We keep your address with your study settings, and you can skip this step or remove it anytime. The privacy notice has the details.

Can I use the app in my language?

Yes. Menus and instructions come in Español, Português, 简体中文, 繁體中文, Français, Filipino, हिन्दी, 한국어, العربية, Tiếng Việt and Kreyòl ayisyen. The questions and answers stay in English, the language most people take the civics test in.

What is 65/20?

If you were 65 or older and had been a permanent resident for at least 20 years when you filed, you study only 20 marked questions, and the officer asks up to 10. Turn on 65/20 in Settings, and the app shows only those questions.

Is newlycitizen part of USCIS?

No. newlycitizen is an independent app, not made or endorsed by USCIS or any government agency. It uses the public USCIS question lists and links to them. For your own case, follow the instructions USCIS gives you.

Can the tutor help with my immigration case?

No. The tutor explains civics and how the test works. For questions about your eligibility or your case, it points you to an immigration attorney or a representative accredited by the Department of Justice.
